Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is cemented onto your natural tooth, resulting in a long-lasting and fully functional tooth restoration! They are an excellent choice of restoration for many types of dental issues, such as:

  • To strengthen and protect a decayed tooth, e.g. one with decay too large to be repaired by a filling
  • To restore a badly worn down, chipped or cracked tooth
  • To change or restore the shape, size or color of a tooth
  • To complete a larger dental restoration, such as a dental implant or bridge

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a custom-made cover designed to fit over your existing tooth, restoring its strength, appearance, and function. Once securely bonded in place, the crown acts like a natural tooth, allowing you to bite, chew, and smile with confidence for years to come.

Dental crowns are commonly recommended for a variety of oral health and cosmetic needs, including:

  • Protecting weakened teeth affected by extensive decay that cannot be treated with a standard filling
  • Repairing teeth that are severely worn, fractured, or chipped
  • Enhancing the shape, size, or shade of a tooth for a more balanced smile
  • Serving as a final restoration for advanced treatments such as dental implants or dental bridges

Durable and versatile, dental crowns offer both functional support and aesthetic improvement in a single solution.

The Procedure

After it’s been confirmed that your tooth and surrounding structure are in good health, getting a dental crown typically requires two visits.

During the first, our dentists will numb the area and shape the tooth so that a crown can fit over it. They will take an impression, which will be sent to a dental lab where the crown is created to beautifully match your other teeth. He will fit you with a temporary crown to protect your tooth while the crown is being made, which generally takes about two weeks.

During the second visit, our dentists will thoroughly inspect the permanent crown to ensure correct size, shape and color. He will then remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent crown into place, again checking to be sure that fit, bite and aesthetics are correct. You will be given care instructions to ensure that your crown lasts a very long time. With proper care, dental crowns can last 10-20 years, or even a lifetime!

The Emergency Dental Crown Repair

Emergency dental crown repair involves immediate care to protect or restore a damaged, loose, or broken dental crown. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a natural tooth or dental implant to restore strength, function, and appearance. When a crown becomes damaged or dislodged, it can cause pain, sensitivity, difficulty chewing, and cosmetic concerns, making prompt treatment essential.

Common Issues Requiring Emergency Crown Repair

  • Loose or Fallen Crown: A crown may come off due to weakened dental cement, decay beneath the crown, or normal wear over time.
  • Cracked or Broken Crown: Crowns can fracture because of trauma, teeth grinding, or biting hard foods.
  • Exposed Tooth Structure: When a crown becomes dislodged, the underlying tooth is left unprotected, which can cause sensitivity or pain.
  • Discomfort or Infection: Bacteria can enter beneath a loose or damaged crown, leading to inflammation or infection.

Steps for Emergency Crown Care

Assess the Situation:

  • Avoid chewing on the affected side if the crown is loose, broken, or missing.
  • Check for sharp edges that may irritate your tongue or gums.

Temporary At-Home Measures:

  • Temporary Dental Cement: Over-the-counter dental cement can temporarily secure a loose crown or protect exposed areas.
  • Orthodontic Wax: Helps smooth sharp edges and protect soft tissues.
  • Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers can help reduce discomfort until you receive professional care.
  • Keep the Crown Safe: If the crown comes out completely, store it safely and bring it to your dental appointment.

Visit a Dentist Promptly:
Emergency dental care is essential for proper crown repair or replacement. Your dentist may:

  • Examine the crown and the underlying tooth
  • Re-cement the crown if it is intact and the tooth is healthy
  • Repair or replace the crown if it is damaged
  • Treat underlying issues such as decay, infection, or tooth fracture

Prevention Tips

  • Avoid chewing hard or sticky foods
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
  • Maintain good oral hygiene around crowned teeth
  • Attend regular dental check-ups to monitor crown stability

Temporary solutions are only short-term. Professional dental treatment provides long-lasting protection and helps prevent further complications. If you experience a crown-related dental emergency, contact your dentist as soon as possible to restore comfort and protect your tooth.
